Here at Remarkable Vets, all of our Veterinarians are MPI certified to assist in exporting your pet to Australia.

We can assist in the process to export your pet to various other countries as well.

If you are considering exporting your pet, we strongly recommend using a Pet Export company to assist in this process. They will assist you in any travel logistics, travel queries, quarantine requirements and guide you through the process. MPI have a list of Pet Exporters here - https://www.mpi.govt.nz/take-or-send-from-nz/pets-leaving-nz/international-pet-transporters/

For Pets Travelling to Australia;

Below are some important points to be aware of:

  • As of 2020 Qantas and Air New Zealand and other airlines have added extra health checks for Brachycephalic breeds (ie bulldogs, french bulldogs, pugs and similar breeds). These extra checks are quite rigorous and have resulted in some pets being unable to travel. We recommend that owners of these types of pets contact a pet exporter as early as possible to see if the extra checks and restrictions apply to them.

  • As of 2020 due to constantly changing flights, short notice border closures, and reduced flights, we strongly recommend that all clients employ a pet export company to assist with navigating this highly changeable environment.

  • We recommend an appointment ideally 30 days prior to the exporting flight, or at the earliest possible date, to discuss all requirements with you, ensure the microchip is functioning and ensure your pet is fit and healthy for travel.

  • If dogs have not continuously resided in New Zealand since birth or since import from Australia (as evidenced by veterinary or council records, or import clearance documents), blood tests may be required before travel.

  • If your pet has been imported into New Zealand from a country other than Australia, or is a stray with an unknown history, additional tests and possibly treatment may be required before they can be exported. Please book an appointment as soon as possible to discuss your situation with one of our export-certified veterinarians.

  • If your pet has previously been imported from Australia, a copy of the Biosecurity Clearance issued on their arrival into New Zealand is required at the time of the pre-exportation appointment. We can assist in obtaining this if required.

  • A pre-export appointment must occur within 5 days of your pet’s international flight. At this time the Export Certificate is completed and your pet is treated for internal and external parasites.

  • If you, as the owner of your pet, are unable to present the pet for the pre-export examination, you must complete an Owner Statutory Declaration and have this signed in the presence of a Justice of the Peace or similar authorised person.

    • We can provide you with this document if required

    • The original document (no copies) must be presented at the time of the pre-export appointment

  • The destination address in Australia and the scheduled flight number and date are required for completion of the Export Certificate.

Exporting to Countries other than Australia

Moving your pet (which is termed as exporting your pet) to another country can be a daunting prospect, but with proper planning and understanding of the export procedure along with the agreed requirements, the process is straightforward.

To export your cat or dog out of New Zealand you will need to read and comply fully with the Overseas Market Access Requirements (OMAR) for the importing country which are held on MPI’s public website. A direct link to the OMARs on the MPI Website can be found below by typing in the link provided at the bottom of this page into your browser.

OMAR’s are the requirements that New Zealand has specifically agreed with that country and New Zealand has promised that every animal which is exported from New Zealand meets those requirements as set out in that OMAR by way of an official export certificate.

Read the OMAR carefully, and with your exporter or normal veterinarian jointly make notes of the times and tests involved and plan how to meet the criteria. Please note, some treatments may need to be ordered in specifically for your pet, and some of the testing requirements can take the approved laboratory several weeks to obtain the result, your pet export company and vet will be able to advise you of these and assist with the time frame

Now is the time to contact a registered pet exporter who will assist you with the entire procedure as much or as little as you need. Do bear in mind that most airlines request the use of a registered pet exporter, and discussing your export with a registered pet exporter well in advance of your proposed move, will make the whole process far less stressful for you. Registered pet exporters will be able to assist you with all aspects of the export, including sourcing the approved crate for travel on a plane and will also give you an indication of cost for the whole process.

As of 2020/2021 Qantas and Air New Zealand and other airlines have added extra health checks for Brachycephalic breeds (ie bulldogs, french bulldogs, pugs and similar breeds). These extra checks are quite rigorous and have resulted in some pets being unable to travel. We recommend that owners of these types of pets contact a pet exporter as early as possible to see if the extra checks and restrictions apply to them.

As of 2020/2021 due to constantly changing flights and short notice border closures due to Covid-19, we strongly recommend that all clients employ a pet export company to assist with navigating this highly changeable environment.

Pets travelling more than six hours by air will also need to have an Animal Welfare Export Certificate (AWEC), which is prepared by the MPI Official vet. Both you and your normal vet will need to complete and sign the supporting declaration form for the AWEC certificate.  The MPI Official vet will draw up and sign the AWEC and the official zoosanitary export certificate whilst examining the animal and using the evidence supplied by your veterinarian who prepared the animal. This appointment is carried out very close to the departure date and time, and in accordance with the OMAR conditions.

Any New Zealand registered veterinarian can prepare a dog or cat for export to any country (except Australia) and the Official MPI veterinarian will use the evidence supplied by your veterinarian to certify the export certificate and the AWEC.

Cats and dogs travelling to Australia follow a different process. Please get in touch with your veterinarian for more information if you are exporting to Australia.
