Could your pet be a hero?

From time to time at Remarkable Vets we require brave pets to donate blood to help save lives

Often our fantastic staff dogs are at the ready to assist but we are always on the lookout for more brave pets to join our blood donor reserve list

Can my pet be a blood donor?

Most of our blood donors are dogs. We are on the look out for dogs that are;

  • Over 28kg

  • Relaxed, well mannered dogs

  • 6yrs and younger

  • Haven’t travelled overseas

  • Haven’t had puppies

  • Not on regular medication

  • Happy and relaxed in the clinic environment

Occasionally we do require cats too!

What is required of me and my pet?

If you would like to volunteer to be on our Remarkable Vets Blood Donor Reserve List, we will get your contact information and keep it on a clinic database. If we require a blood donor we may give you a call.

What happens if my pet is called in?

If we call up and ask for your pet to assist in a blood donation we would need you to bring your pet to our Frankton clinic. We would chat you through the process and do a quick consent form. You would then leave your pet with us and we will administer a light sedation to allow us to collect the blood sample. Once we have filled the blood collection bag, we will reverse your pet’s sedation, recover them in a warm snuggly bed and reward them with a tasty snack afterwards!

Your pet will take home a bag of their favourite food to thank them for their hard work.

Once we receive your pet’s blood donation we will begin the transfusion for the pet in need.

Blood Donation Fun Facts!

Unlike humans, dogs do not need to receive the same blood type as their own on their first blood transfusion. However if a dog requires additional blood transfusions then they do need to receive the same blood type. This is another reason it’s great to have plenty of dogs on our reserve list!

Cats must receive the same blood type as their own, but did you know that in an emergency cats can receive a dog's blood? This is called xenotransfusion.

If you’re interested in your pet being a blood donor, please contact Remarkable Vets on 03 442 1411 or [email protected] with your best contact information and let us know if you’re happy to be contacted outside of business hours in case a blood donor is needed after hours!
