Remarkable Vets is fortunate to have considerable equine experience
in its staff and we're also fortunate to have a growing number
of horses in the area being used for higher levels of competition.
Geoff spent time in the UK at the Equine Sports Medicine Institute
in Bristol as well as working for 5 years in a practice close
to Walmsleys Equine Hospital in Liphook, Hampshire where a close
association was formed via referrals, assisting in theatre and
sharing of expertise.
Dentistry
It was in Hampshire that Geoff developed his interest and expertise
in equine dentistry. For a long time the veterinary profession
had overlooked dental care but in the last 15 years it has been
embraced as knowledge of equine dental physiology and the standard
of equipment available has increased exponentially. The availability
of safer and more predictable drugs for sedation has allowed a
much higher standard of care to be maintained and now vets are
among the leading exponents of equine dentistry.
Geoff has added to his list of dental equipment a power rasp
that is battery pack operated. This means that the more technical
and extensive jobs can still be performed in the field. This piece
of equipment, designed by vets and only available to vets, has
transformed the level of care that can be offered by Remarkable
Vets dental services.
Anesthesia and Surgery
Anaesthesia in the field is able to be performed whereby procedures
of up to 60minutes duration can be carried out safely. This is
an exciting part of the skill base at Remarkable Vets and we welcome
the opportunity to perform minor to moderate procedures.
For highly technical operations such as surgical colics we have
a close association with specialist equine surgeon Brendan Bell
from Southern Equine Services in Invercargill. We will promptly
refer to this high class clinic when we are unable to complete
the necessary procedures.
Faecal Egg Counts
Parasite monitoring is a pet interest of Geoff and the team at
Remarkable Vets. Rather than worm horses excessively and unnecessarily
we would rather test and treat only when required. This faecal
